Internship Goals

Before I begin my internship I have laid out some goals in order to motivate me to be a successful intern. For me setting goals before beginning a task is the best way to set yourself apart from a group.

Goals

  • Communication

Fluid communication between members working on any project is a must. Stable communication allows a project to move forward on track and reduce the risk of mistakes being made. For my experience communication will be crucial as I will have to be on the same page as multiple supervisors. Additionally I will have to assist park guest in Ieranto bay. The reason I chose communication as a goal is because I will be working through a language barrier during this experience. My goal is to not only stay in touch with my supervisors but also learn to communicate with park guest even if they do not speak english.

  • Park Cleanup

Another goal I have set is to cleanup the park. After my first day in Ieranto I noticed a lot of trash that was coming into the park from ocean currents. Due to the high population density of the Mediterranean coast there are many problems with pollution. After seeing such as beautiful place tainted by litter I decided I want to help fellow American student Micheal Demercurio on his research project on marine litter. During this research we will clean the park and analyze the trash we find in order to build a data set on the litter.

  • Cultural Immersion

My last big goal of this international experience is to immerse myself in Italian culture. One of the reasons why this internship is so beneficial is because it is international. Not only will I be working with other languages but the working culture in Italy is much different than that of the United States. In order to make the most of this experience I want to immerse myself in this culture and develope a thorough understanding of the culture of Southern Italy. Additionally I will be working with volunteers from all over the European Union. This will allow me to get a truly diverse working experience and help me become a more culturally competent worker.

Project Management

Over the course of my internship I will be using a project management plan where I analyze my approach for the project, who or what is at stake, Anticipated challenges and how to overcome them, and the desired results of the project

Approach

My approach to this internship is simple confidence, and open-mindedness. I am confident in my ability to be a hard worker, but also in my ability to be friendly and collaborate with others. However it does not matter how well you can work if you do not have an open mind. I have prepared myself to be ready for every possibility so I am prepared when it arrives. I do not want to go into a project like this with a closed mind as it will only limit my abilities to learn and overcome potential challenges

Stakeholders

The next step in project management is to analyze the stakeholders. In the instance of my internship at Ieranto bay the stakeholders are myself, Marine Biologist and leader of the interns Domenico Sgambati, my fellow intern, and all the visitors of Ieranto bay. All of these people will be affected in some way by my work at Ieranto. It is very productive to analyze who is at stake in a project because once you acknowledge this, you can make better decisions on site to ensure your impact on stakeholders is always positive

Anticipated Challenges

The third step in this project management plan is to acknowledge potential challenges and plan ahead in solving them. For my internship at Ieranto bay I anticipate my main challenge to be balancing classwork with internship work. While I am working the internship at Ieranto I am also taking a Communications course with a focus on Amalfi culture. While both of these projects will be both full-filling and enjoyable, I anticipate the workload to be very strenous. After acknowledging this potential struggle I came up with some ways to manage the challenge. First strategy was to inform both my Communications professor and my Internship Boss of my other obligations so they are aware. Next I provided both people with my full schedule so they are aware of when I have seperate obligations. Finally I mentally prepared myself for a heavy workload so I am not shocked or unprepared when it arrives.

Desired Results

The final step of project management is to consider your the desired results of your project. This is beneficial because if you visualize your final results, the process of achieving them will become less daunting as you have already achieved it in your mind. For my Internship with Domenico Sgambati I have laid out a few goals I hope to achieve my the end of my fifth week. The first result I hope to achieve is to improve upon my workplace communication. As I stated before I am very confident in my ability to work hard. However in the modern world you must also be able to communicate very well with your co-workers so you can not only work hard, but work efficiently. To be able to gain this experience in an internship before I start my career would be very beneficial to me. However more importantly than my personal future, I hope to better the future of Ieranto bay. While this internship will benefit my own life very much, I ultimately hope that my work improves the ecological health of Ieranto, but also makes it a haven for visitors to enjoy the natural world. I truly love the sea and it pains me to see garbage floating around, and animals being killed as a result. My ultimate result of this project is to leave Ieranto bay and its visitors better than when I arrived.
